7-Inch Smart Display: New CAN Bus Model with Custom CAN ID Protocol + GPIO

WINSTAR is excited to introduce a new 7-inch Smart Display model in our CAN Bus Series, featuring Custom CAN ID protocol along with GPIO support. This new model expands the capabilities of our product line. Here's a summary of its key features:

  1. Automatic Self-Test and Initialization: Automatically performs self-test and initializes the display upon power-up for a seamless and reliable setup.
  2. CAN Bus Interface: Provides stable CAN Bus communication with support for Custom CAN ID protocol at a default speed of 250KB, enabling versatile system integration.
  3. 16MB Flash Memory: Includes 16MB of flash memory to store fonts and object dictionaries, enhancing performance and supporting complex graphical interfaces.
  4. Capacitive Touchscreen: Utilizes projected capacitive touchscreen technology for a responsive and intuitive user experience.
  5. Integrated Buzzer: Features an integrated buzzer for audible feedback, enhancing user interaction.
  6. GPIO Support: Adds 8 bi-directional GPIO channels with TTL 3.3V logic levels, configurable through PC tools and Smart Display GUI Builder, providing additional hardware connection options.
  7. Host Platform Compatibility: Compatible with computers via USB-to-CAN adapters, Raspberry Pi with PiCAN2, and MCUs such as Arduino with a CAN adapter.
  8. User-Friendly Interface Design: The WINSTAR GUI Builder software supports drag-and-drop interface design with a WYSIWYG approach, available for Windows systems.

This new 7-inch Smart Display with added GPIO functionality enhances the CAN Bus Series, offering expanded capabilities for both prototyping and production.

Ultra-Low Power and Energy Efficient Displays: WINSTAR's EPD Solutions

In response to the global emphasis on corporate ESG and energy conservation and with the rising demand for portable displays, the need for energy-efficient, low-power consumption displays is increasing. WINSTAR is promoting electronic paper display (EPD) technology, which offers high energy efficiency,saving characteristics and a comfortable visual experience, making it a market focal point. EPDs, like regular paper, rely on ambient light reflection, providing a comfortable reading experience and maintaining clarity even under direct sunlight. With a wide viewing angle (theoretically 180 degrees), EPDs offer better contrast than other display technologies, comparable to or better than print quality. There are many types of EPDs, and this article introduces the technology principles, applications, and advantages of WINSTAR electrophoretic EPD.

E-paper Display Technology Principles:

E-paper Display (EPD) technology, also known as electronic ink display technology, relies on microcapsule technology. The basic structure of an EPD includes millions of tiny capsules, each containing two types of electrophoretic particles: negatively charged white particles and positively charged black particles, suspended in a transparent fluid.

  • Electrophoresis: When an electric field is applied, the corresponding black or white particles move to the top of the microcapsule, making the area appear black or white to the user. This is achieved by utilizing the charged particles and the principle of attraction under an electric field.
  • Bistable Technology: By supplying electrodes with positive and negative electric fields, the charged black and white particles move and align according to the attraction principle of different charges. After removing the electric field, the particle arrangement remains unchanged, keeping the image constant. When updating the image, a different electric field is applied to the electrodes, causing the particles to move again, resulting in a screen refresh. The new electric field pattern rearranges the black and white particles, updating the display.

WINSTAR's latest innovation combines VATN LCD technology with cutting-edge touch key functionality, offering a superior display solution that excels in both visual quality and touch sensitivity.

Unveiling VATN LCD Technology

Vertical Alignment Twisted Nematic (VATN) LCD technology stands out due to its exceptional contrast and wide viewing angles. Unlike traditional TN LCDs, VATN LCDs align their liquid crystal molecules perpendicular to the glass substrate when not energized, resulting in a deep black state. Upon applying voltage, these molecules tilt, allowing light to pass and displaying a crisp white state, ensuring higher contrast ratios compared to TN displays.

Traditional VATN displays often face challenges like gray scale inversion at certain viewing angles due to the birefringence properties of liquid crystals. The improved VATN technology uses a fringe-field effect to create a symmetric and curved electric field. This design allows liquid crystal molecules to tilt in various directions, offering consistent brightness and eliminating gray scale inversion across wide viewing angles.
